Our Commitment To Sustainability

Warwick Glass scoops national sustainability award

Window, door and conservatory specialist Warwick Glass has won a top national accolade for its commitment to the environment and to driving sustainable business practices throughout it operation.

The company, which employs more than 40 people from its Montague Road base scooped the Award for Sustainable Innovation at the Sierra Window Industry Awards 2009.

It follows significant investment by the retail and commercial window installation business in new systems to allow it to fully recycle old PVC-U windows at the end of life and its campaign to promote energy efficient products to the homeowner.

Managing sales manager Neil Godfrey, said: “We have seen sustainability as going hand-in-hand with good business practice. We’re delighted that our commitment to the environment, to energy efficiency and to the recovery and recycling of old PVC-U windows at end of life, have been recognised – it’s a fantastic achievement.”

The average three-bedroom Warwickshire home produces six tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, multiply that nationally and you get a total of 83 million tonnes. This has made home energy efficiency vital in the fight against climate change but also subject of considerable government interest.

Neil said: “Given the importance of home energy efficiency in hitting targets to cut CO2 the Government is focussing on a number of possible new incentives to encourage people to improve the energy performance of their property.

“In addition it is also considering brining in new taxes which could be applied as a penalty on properties which fail to meet future standards for efficiency.

“But there are also plenty of other reasons for home owners to improve the energy performance of their properties, not least because energy efficient windows and doors can also deliver big savings on your heating bills with energy efficient home improvements, often paying for themselves in fuel cost savings.

“In fact ‘A’ rated windows can cut heat loss compared to a non-energy efficient window by up to £254* per year in an average three bedroom home, also delivering a 17 tonne CO2 saving over a ten year period – the equivalent of more ten double decker buses full.”

Warwick Glass’ commitment to sustainability was recognised at an awards dinner held at the Belfry Golf Club. Fighting off challenges from more than 300 other window companies from the length and breadth of the UK the company brought the Award for Sustainable Innovation home to Warwickshire.

Brian Webb, spokesman for the Sierra Window Industry Awards said: “The PVC-U window industry is delivering a new generation of advanced performance products that are not only low maintenance but which are making homes warmer, more secure, energy efficient and which are also fully recyclable at end of life.

“Warwick Glass is at the very forefront of this cutting edge innovation, a company that hasn’t merely paid lip service to sustainability but which has embraced it in full. Combined with a commitment to service and quality, they are shining example of how to do business responsibly but also how it can have a positive environmental impact.”
